Sia- Chandelier Analysis
In this music video, both artificial and natural lighting is used. The lighting is mostly very dim and dark and this gives it a mysterious feeling. The mise en scene is very unusual and weird. It significantly grabs the audiences attention, for example the nude coloured clothing the girl is wearing, the platinum short wig, the creepy paintings and drawings on the wall, and even the vintage looking dirty walls. The choreography is contemporary postmodern dance. It seems very unusual however every move has a meaning and it describes the feeling of the person. The person who is singing the song is not in the music video at all , it is a very simple music video of the dancer dancing around the whole house and using the use of space as much as she can. The movements are very surreal. There are many long and wide shots used to show the surroundings and the full movements of the dancer. There were also some close ups and mid shots to show the facial expressions of the dancer which were again very surreal. The whole music video is also very abstract and it clearly differs from many other music videos. During the chorus the dance movements were more lively and during the verses they were a lot more slower and less jumpy. There was match on action when the girl walked through the door and then we saw her from a shoulders view to show that she entered a different view which helped the audience to not get confused.
Selena Gomez- The Heart Wants What It Wants Analysis
The talking and crying in the beginning of the video sets the atmosphere of the video and sets the audience in an emotional mood as we can clearly hear the raw emotions coming out of the words she was saying like ' I know his heart and I know what he wouldn't do to hurt me' 'I was in pain'. The whole music video is in slow motion as we notice that the speed of each scene has been decreased. This matches the mood of the video because usually fast pace is used in energetic music videos. The music video is black and white and this could have been used as a metaphor rather than just a theme in this song. White is associated with innocence, purity and goodness whereas black is associated with power, mystery and death. The use of black and white could suggest right or wrong or good and bad and this links with the video because 'The heart wants what it wants' could suggest that although something might not be good for you the person might still want it or see the good in it because some people do what their heart says not their mind. In addition, black and white could also mean that the things that have happened in the music video could have been affecting people for centuries. There are a lot of close ups in the music video of Selena's face which is done to show her facial expressions and her facial expressions connoted pain, sadness and heart break. There are many two shots used to show the relationship between Selena and the other man. For editing, there are flashbacks to show to happy memories Selena had with the man and we notice that it is a flashback because the black and white is a different shade of black and white during those specific flashback scenes. The flashbacks were more washed out and more vintage looking and not as clear. There is also lots of depth of field and shallow focus used to move focus from one object to another. Eg from Selena to the other man.

Ariana Grande-Problem Analysis
From the beginning we notice that the cutting rate of the scenes is very fast which immediately makes us assume that the song is energetic. For the background in one of Ariana's scenes the background was projected onto the wall and it is similar to hypnotising videos. The projected background is black and white and it looks vintage. There is green screen so that later on when edited other backgrounds could be added and in this case Iggy was in front of a very colourful moving background. There is also a split screen when Iggy is singing and this made everything more interesting and added a fast pace to the song. When transitioning to other scenes most of the time wipe transition is used. There are many zoom in and outs throughout the video from the beginning eg when Ariana is dancing, the camera is zoomed in and it zooms out in a very fast pace and shows the other dancers and the surroundings too. There is a bird's eye view when Ariana is on the rotating platform and this makes her seem promiscuous and seems like she needs the audiences attention. There is a black and white colour scheme on most of the scenes, also the baby pink colour that is used makes Ariana seem child like and also makes the whole music video seem cute. There is also added retro filter that you would see on old TV's and this makes the music video look vintage. The are also match cuts with arms raised. This is a performance based music video and narrative too. There is also dance choreography and the moves are very jumpy and active.
Filming Induction
In today's lesson we were introduced to how to use Canon DSLR cameras when filming our music video next year. We learnt about how one of the significant settings you need to change before filming is to make sure the recording size is 1080p 25fps. This is the highest level on these cameras and we have to use it as it is HD.
There is also the exposure control and we can play around with the shutter speed, aperture and ISO. If the shutter speed is low the lighting would be dark as the movement of the shutter would be slow. This is why the shutter should be on 50 as for filming that is an appropriate setting.
The aperture is what we should experiment with. When the aperture is bigger more light would come in which means depending on the theme or lighting of your music video we can change the aperture and increase or decrease the lighting.
ISO is about light sensitivity and we can change the setting between 100-1600.
The third area is to do with colour. Neutral is when there is no filter and we don't want that as we want it to be completely neutral and clean however it can be changed.
Auto White Balance should be on Auto mode because we don't want it to be white washed where there is no definition.
For the focus, the mode needs to be on MF because that is the best mode for filming, because you can change the focus.
Quick Menu is to get back to the menu and change any of the settings. Also the fact that these cameras are touch screen makes everything much less time consuming and easy to use and understand.
