Selena Gomez- The Heart Wants What It Wants Analysis
The talking and crying in the beginning of the video sets the atmosphere of the video and sets the audience in an emotional mood as we can clearly hear the raw emotions coming out of the words she was saying like ' I know his heart and I know what he wouldn't do to hurt me' 'I was in pain'. The whole music video is in slow motion as we notice that the speed of each scene has been decreased. This matches the mood of the video because usually fast pace is used in energetic music videos. The music video is black and white and this could have been used as a metaphor rather than just a theme in this song. White is associated with innocence, purity and goodness whereas black is associated with power, mystery and death. The use of black and white could suggest right or wrong or good and bad and this links with the video because 'The heart wants what it wants' could suggest that although something might not be good for you the person might still want it or see the good in it because some people do what their heart says not their mind. In addition, black and white could also mean that the things that have happened in the music video could have been affecting people for centuries. There are a lot of close ups in the music video of Selena's face which is done to show her facial expressions and her facial expressions connoted pain, sadness and heart break. There are many two shots used to show the relationship between Selena and the other man. For editing, there are flashbacks to show to happy memories Selena had with the man and we notice that it is a flashback because the black and white is a different shade of black and white during those specific flashback scenes. The flashbacks were more washed out and more vintage looking and not as clear. There is also lots of depth of field and shallow focus used to move focus from one object to another. Eg from Selena to the other man.
